Welcome to the Province of Dumnonia in the Masonic Order of Athelstan.
Our objective is to assist both members and non-members in answering questions about the Order, whilst trying to provide the latest information regarding events happening within the Province
What is the Masonic Order of Athelstan?
The Masonic Order of Athelstan is a strictly invitational only Order based on the life and times of King Athelstan, Grandson of King Alfred the Great who united the various kingdoms of England to become the first King of all England.
A new member goes through what is termed a 'Ceremony of Instruction' embodying symbolism that is still seen in some Masonic Lodges today, and a great deal that is no longer seen in any other Masonic Orders.
Portraying the life of 10th Century England and Wales, a Master Mason is summoned to York in 926 AD before a great Assembly of Masons to receive the Ancient Charges from the king.
The Order, in England and Wales, is structured so that its Provinces, wherever possible, reflect and represent the original Kingdoms established by King Athelstan. Unlike many other Masonic Orders, the Athelstan Provincial structure does not correspond to current English Counties. At present, each Province is limited to a maximum of ten Courts ( A Court being the Athelstan equivalent of a Lodge).
Qualifications for membership?
Prospective members must be a current Subscribing member of a masonic Craft Lodge recognised by the United Grand Lodge of England and a current subscribing member of a Royal Arch Chapter recognised by the Supreme Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of England
